The Dalles Daily Chronicle, great national questions and matters pertaining to the best interests of WEDNESDAY FEB. 1901 Oregon. Baker City Kepublican. PRESS ON MITCHELL'S TION. ELEC- John H. Mitchell. United senator-elect from Oregon, occupies a position in American politics not reached by any other man. Mr. Mitchell, always a republican, has twice been elected by aid of votes of the opposite party. Twice has he snatched victory from his opponents, not in the eleventh hour, but even after the twelfth hour had elapsed, and twice has he wrested from Hen ry Corbett, at periods 28 yearB apart, the legislative plum that seems to be coveted by nearly all Americans of wealth and influence. Spokesman lie view. (Ind.1 tit i . , i . r ' 1 uueiuer agreeing wnu aenniurt Mitchell's past or present views on the leading political questions, there can be no dissent from the fact that be is a man of great standing and ability and at the same time a courageous worker for the general interests of the state. His previous record in the United States senate is one which brought distinction and credit to the state of Oregon, and when he drops back into his old place he will be in a position to take up the woik practically where he left off in 1897, when his defeat was ac complished by a discreditable and revolutionary method in holding up tbe legislature. La Grande Chron icle. (Dem.) Senutor John II. Mitchell has been elected United States senator for Oregon. He is a man of long ex perience in national legislation, an able man and a friend to the state he represents. He will distinguish him self in tbe future, as be has done in tbe past, by attending closely to Ex-Senator Corbett is a good fighter and an able man, but he is States i not lucky and he is not a winner. He maintained too many people who bad no other avocation but pulling his leg. There are any number of his "followers" who today find their occupations gone. For the last two or three years Mr. Corbett's desire to down those who opposed him has been capitalized by as merry a gang of rascals as ever scuttled a ship or patted a rich man on the back in order that he might be encouraged to "dig up." Mr. Corbett simply dropped to the level of those whom he held communication with for pur poses which he knew were not law. ful or even respectable. For in stance the Dresser incident reflected more upon Mr. Corbett than it did on its victim Dresser. Mr. Corbett was unfortunate in the selection of l the "flies" whom he cautdit with his "sugar" and whom he entrusted with the distribution of it. East Otc- goman. (Dem.) .1 MOST IGNOBLE WHINE. Mr. Corbett retires most ungrace fully into the political obscurity that befits a man who has been so often rejected by the people. His card published in another column, ad dressed to "The Twenty -eight Stal wart Republicans," who stood by him to the last, is more like the whimpering of a whipped scbool.boy than the language of the grave and sagacious statesman his friends would have us believe him to be. He went into tbe fight and got licked. It is the fortune of war. Now let him take his medicine like a man and not ignobly fume and fret and whine over his defeat like a spoiled child. with who 1ms been a troubler in Israel for lo these many years. The belief is common that Mr. Mitchell can do more for the whole state than any other candidate ex cept perhaps Hermann, and many place him ahead of Hermans in this respect. Ho is a very accomraodat ing senator, always appreciating the fact that he represents the people of the state regardless of politics, and that a man doesn't have to be a re publican to receive a favor. Sena tor Mitchell stands well in Washing ton and will have an influence there no one else at this time could com mand. Albany Democrat. Remember that you don't have to be bald ; you can keep your hair by using Cocoanut Cream Hair Tonic, To be bad at Frszer'i barber shop. ' tf "If the tour bad stood firm their friends the result would evi dently been different," blubbers out this disappointed politician. Most certainly it would ; but it would have inevitably resulted in a deadlock, an alternative that, ns every act of this seuisu unci unpatriotic old man proves, would have been preferable to him, no matter what the result might have been to the state, than the election of another man. Thk Chuomci-k is not raking the ashes of the dead. Let tbe old man maintain the dignity befitting a political corpse, and tbe maxim that enjoins us to speak reverently of the dead will never be violated. There were kings before Agamemnon and there will be republicans long after Mr. Corbett shall have been gathered lo his fathers. The world is not coming to an end becauso Mr. Cor bett has been defeated. The earth still turns as steadily on its axis, the sun shines eh bright and tbe stars twinkle as merrily as tbey did before tbe midnight hour of February 2Jjd when a patriotic majority of the Oregon legislature crushed into Im palpable dust tbe ambition of a man llow It Ih I)iiii.
